You're In

Pick me! Pick me!

I can remember raising my hand sky high, straining to get it up higher so the teacher would call on me. I knew the answer. Sometimes when I’m in front of a group of children, hands will be raised even if they don’t know the answer just to be called on. If I need a helper, the kids’ hands go up. Pick me!

Can you remember doing that? It seems like we outgrow it. Someone asks for volunteers and no hands go up. We’re a little jaded, sure that the volunteer will get stuck with the worst task. A good friend of Terry and mine once was in a group where that question was asked. No hands went up, so Doug put his up. Why not? Turned out to be a prime position!

I think even if we adults are too wary of raising our hands we still want cry out, pick me! We value who has the most followers on social media. We watch to see how many likes our posts get. We rally behind local sports teams to be part of the in-crowd. We don’t want to be left out. We want the promotion, the invite, the applause.

And we wonder, does God pick me? Of course! But then we are a little afraid: will we get the good jobs or the crummy ones?

We buy into the idea that God only picks the ones who believe, have enough faith, are part of the right church, tithe, serve others, never swear, keep the commandments…well, the list of things we can think are requirements to God choosing us goes on and on.

But it’s wrong. In John 15:16, Jesus says, “You did not choose me. But I chose you.” It’s not prefaced with if you do this, I will choose you. It doesn’t go on to say, when I choose you, you must do this. But simple: I chose you.

We are created in the image of God. God says that we are good. We are chosen. ALL are chosen. “The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands.” John 3:35 (emphasis mine)

You are picked. I am picked. They are picked. We’re all in!

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 or 10:30 am to celebrate this Good News! It won’t be the same without you.

Grace be with you,

Vikki
