Worried Focus

Jesus is still teaching on the mountainside in the 6th chapter of Matthew.  In The Message Bible paraphrase by Eugene Peterson, we hear some of Jesus' words from verses 24-34 this way:

"If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion." ...then Jesus talks about how if God takes care of the birds and the flowers, he will surely take care of us.  Jesus goes on to say,

"What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works.  Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions....Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now..."

Easier said than done, huh?  It's easy to get caught up in worry over so many things that we lose our focus on God and what God is doing and giving to us right now.   Did you hear about the reigning Miss Colorado?  A beautiful young woman who lost her father at 14, helps take care of her mom who has had health issues and she is currently homeless.  Her attitude to focus on what God is doing right now is amazing.  I wish I had faith like that.

And Jesus wishes for us to have faith like that, too.  Spend some time with his words in Matthew 6:24-34 and hear what he's offering.  A life where worry fades into the background, and gratitude and acknowledgment of God's  presence is in the center.

God bless you,
