Words Continue to Be True

I enjoy reading and learning about WWII history and I just read a book I highly recommend - Beneath a Scarlet Sky.  It’s a true story about Pino Lella, a 17 year-old boy living in Milan, Italy.  In June, 1943, his parents send him to a boy’s school high in the Italian Alps to keep him safe from the Germans and the Allied bombing.  Pino is a big, strong kid, and Father Re (who runs the school) immediately makes him start hiking.  Pino learns several routes up over the Alps into Switzerland.

Soon, Father Re asks Pino if he will accept the risk and responsibility of starting an underground railroad of guiding Italian Jewish families on these routes into Switzerland.  Pino has a very strong Christian faith, but he is also concerned about being caught and executed by the Germans.  Father Re tells him to have faith and reminds him of the scripture verse, John 14:27 – Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.  He tells Pino that these words spoken by Christ have been true for over 1900 years and that they continue to be true.

Pino takes this to heart and makes many trips to Switzerland smuggling Jews to safety.  He later enlists in the German army to avoid being drafted and sent to the Russian Front where his odds of surviving are extremely low.  He becomes the driver for highest ranking German general in Italy that reports directly to Hitler.  Pino immediately becomes a spy for the Italian Resistance.  From this position, he sees and hears a tremendous amount of strategic and tactical information that he passes along to the Resistance and later to the Allies.

Pino Lella has gone on to lead an incredible life throughout Europe and the US.  He is still alive today.

Heavenly Father, may we continue to recognize and be reminded that your Word is as true today as it has been for thousands of years.  May our hearts not be troubled and may we not be afraid.  Amen.
