“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” I am guessing most of you are familiar with this old adage. My well-meaning parents shared it with me to help me gather strength against playground taunts. But they were wrong, words do hurt. The sting of unkind words can be so hard to shake…they seem to stay with you forever.

With this age of social media words have more power and presence than ever before. We text them and tweet them. We post them and share them. It is easy to do when you are not looking at someone face to face. You can’t see the sudden pain your words have caused. You can’t hear the tears that fall because you didn’t think before you spoke.

I like Solomon’s version of sticks and stones…

Proverbs 12:18~Good News Translation (GNT)
18 Thoughtless words can wound as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal.

This song by Hawks Nelson inspired my devotion for today.

Abba, I pray as I follow Jesus that I am mindful of the wisdom shared by King Solomon in Proverbs and the modern day wisdom of the Hawks Nelson band. May my words be life, love and light always reflecting your glory to the world and turning all eyes and ears back to you. Amen

Julie Weldon
