Wide, Long, High & Deep


Ephesians 3:1-21

Ephesians 3:14-19 "For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his spirit in your inner being, so Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of GOD."

Do we, you and I, grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ? I don't believe I do and I wonder what it would take for me to do this? I understand that in some ways it is a journey... a journey of discovery. But where am I on this journey? Do I get a say in the journey? Can I stop or retrace my steps... are there redo's?

Paul goes on to say in the first half of verse 19 "and to know this love that surpasses knowledge." I was struck by this verse because, as Esther Perel found in her research for her book "Mating in Captivity" that they (20 - 30 year olds) "seem to find more security in an MBA than in the power of a sustaining loving bond." Do we, you and I, find more power in knowledge than in a sustaining loving bond? Is this only for 20-30 year olds or is this an age independent phenomena?

And Paul ends with the 2nd half of verse 19 "that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of GOD."

Do we grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of GOD is?

Are we letting the world with its advertising, its glamor, its glitz, its fear, its lessons give us knowledge that prevents us or makes us think twice about searching out and developing wonderful sustaining loving bonds?

Are we preventing ourselves from being filled to the measure of all the fullness of GOD?

As we travel on our journeys, as we cross paths with those around us there are two things I keep in my heart, there are two things I thank GOD for...

There is nothing I can do to make GOD love me any less and there is nothing I can do to make GOD love me anymore! I can only grow and glory in how wide and long and high and deep is the love of GOD!

Precious Father, Loving GOD, Holy Spirit, I pray you open my eyes, my heart, my arms, my hands to you, to myself, to my family, to my friends, to my neighbors, to the world! AMEN!
