Why do I worry so much?

Can any of you add a cubit to his height by worrying? If then you’re not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest? Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these! If that’s how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will He do for you—you of little faith. Don’t keep striving for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don’t be anxious. For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you (Luke 12:25-31).

I am GREAT at worrying. –and I even say, “I should practice it more, so I can become even better at it.” –what is wrong with me? My reasoning: if I worry, I will think things through and be more in control and prepared. I am a planner. I am all about the details. I like to be in control. I like to know what is coming next. I like things done my way, in my timing.

In my anxiety and need to know all the outcomes, I am missing out on a sweet work that God wants to accomplish within me. I often forget that God is a good Father who has my best in mind. I am all too occupied with what situations look like in the natural rather than through His perspective. His heart for us is to remember His goodness and His love toward us. As we remember that, we lean into His presence and find rest there.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:4, 6-7) Amen.
