Who's Your Mama ?

Mark 3:34-35 (NIV): Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."

My Daddy was raised in a children's home after his Mama dropped he, along with his younger brother and sister, off at the Mennonite Children's Home in Kansas City in 1934. He was eight years old. He felt abandoned. He wanted a family like "normal" kids. His Mama couldn't support the kids anymore and wanted them to be in a safe place. He cried.

We sang a Bill Gaither song around our house a lot when I was growing up. I can still hear my Daddy singing it in my heart:

Chorus: I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God.
I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by his blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod;
For I'm part of the family, the family of God.

Verse 1: You will notice we say "brother and sister" round here,
It's because we're a family and these are so near.
When one has a heartache, we all share the tears,
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.

Verse 2: From the door of an orphanage to the house of the King,
No longer an outcast, a new song I sing;
From rags unto riches, from the weak to the strong,
I'm not worthy to be here, but praise God, I belong!

Thank you Jesus for welcoming us into your family. Happy or sad, we can always share. Family is always there to dry my tears and share my joys. Who is your family today? Define it. Who will call you their brother, sister, or mother today? Be kind and thoughtful and welcome new family members into your world.

God bless my family today. Bless all my brothers and sisters who fervently love you and do your will. Amen.
