Who is He?

Dear Followers of Jesus,

“When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 'what are people saying about who the Son of Man is?' (Matthew 16:13, the Message Translation)

Jesus speaks of himself as nothing less than the Son of Man. C.S. Lewis mocks those who would try to remake Jesus into a “great moral teacher”:

“I am trying here to prevent anyone

saying the really foolish things that

people often say about Jesus: ‘I’m ready

to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher,

but I don’t accept Jesus' claim to be God.’

That is the one thing we must not say.

A man who was merely a man said

the sort of things Jesus said would not

be a great moral teacher. He would

either be a lunatic –on a level with the

man who says he is a poached egg—or

else he would be the Devil of Hell. You

must make your choice. Either this man

was, and is the Son of God: or else a

madman or something worse. You can

shut Jesus up for a fool, you can spit at

Him and kill Him as a demon; or you

can fall at His feet and call Him Lord

and God. But let us not come with any

                                    patronizing nonsense about His being

a great human teacher. He has not left

that open to us. He did not intend to.”

                                            -C.S. Lewis, “Mere Christianity"

Who is this Jesus? Do you resonate with the words of C.S. Lewis? Read Matthew 16:13-20 to glean the full conversation Jesus had with Peter and his disciples. Jesus asks, “Who do they say that I am?"

Peter responds, ”You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus tells Peter “God bless you..” you are onto some understanding that will transform your life, and change the world.

Who do you say that Jesus is?  May that question be on your heart not as a burden but as a portion of a sacred conversation that offers you a peace that is beyond all human understanding.

Prayers: For Gloria Mitchell who was able to go home from the hospital on Saturday; for the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.; for the Gods Grace Community Advance January 27TH  on PRAYER and our participation in it; and for our life’s journey of discovering anew who Jesus is, each day.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
