White As Snow

I went snowshoeing on Wednesday afternoon with my daughter Annika who is visiting from Switzerland. We went down to the Dawson Butte open space near Larkspur, one of Douglas County’s wonderful open space reserves. It was a beautiful afternoon – it had just stopped snowing and we found ourselves facing a trail with 6-10 inches of unbroken snow – truly a winter wonderland. The fresh snow and clean air and quiet conditions with very few people in the park were the picture of peace and even purity. Snow would be easier to live with if it didn’t accumulate too much or get dirty after a few days of human activity. I remember some winters in Chicago which seemed to never end, where February and March saw us regularly praying for a fresh snow to cover the dirty piles and ruts which were everywhere.

Being in this beautiful environment of God’s creation reminded me of these words from Psalm 51:7 – “wash me and I shall be whiter than snow”. The snow on Wednesday gave me a vivid picture of just how white and fresh that can be. A fresh snow covers everything, including all of the ugly spots that might be present. So too, God’s forgiveness covers all of the ugly aspects in our lives which we would like to forget about.

As we go through additional snowfalls this winter, and are occasionally annoyed or inconvenienced by the snow coming at a bad time, I invite you to be reminded of the Psalmist’s prayer that inspired a hymn-writer nearly 150 years ago –“now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.”

Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole,

I want Thee forever to live in my soul;

Break down every idol, cast out every foe-

Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, Thou seest I patiently wait,

Come now and within me a new heart create,

To those who have sought Thee Thou never said’st no,

Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
