Whispers of God

Everything seems to be loud and bold and overwhelming these days. Or, is it just me? Where is God in all the noise? Is God trying to out-do it and speak louder than everything else? Is God speaking in hurricanes, floods, wildfires, mudslides, tornadoes?

We hear about the prophet (one who speaks for God) Elijah needing a personal word from God for he is weary of trying to convince the people to stop worshipping false gods. He’s at the Mountain of God, hiding for his life in a cave. God says that God will come to Elijah.

First, there’s a hurricane wind, but God wasn’t found in the wind. Then an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but God wasn’t there either. After the fire there came a gentle and quiet whisper. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

It was in the quiet that God spoke with Elijah, listened to him and gave Elijah instruction.

We learn from God’s Word and from Elijah’s experience that God comes softly, gently, quietly and whispery. Where do you find the space for quiet? Do you seek silence or does it frighten you?

May we learn to be intentional about seeking God not among the noise of our day, but in quiet moments of our lives.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 or 10:30 am as we gather to worship and thank God, to listen for a word from God, to sit in some silence together and be encouraged.

Grace be with you,
