Where are we going?

“Don’t let this throw you. You trust God, don’t you? Trust me. There is plenty of room for you in my Father’s home. If that weren’t so, would I have told you that I’m on my way to get a room ready for you? And if I’m on my way to get your room ready, I’ll come back and get you so you can live where I live. And you already know the road I’m taking.”

Thomas said, “Master, we have no idea where you’re going. How do you expect us to know the road?”  John 14:1-5 The Msg

I’ve been reflecting on this scripture as it’s the Bible passage that will be the focus of our worship tomorrow.  The phrase that has stood out to me this week has been Thomas saying, “We have no idea where you’re going.

Don’t we, too, often feel that way?  We have no idea where we’re going. And if I don’t know where I’m going, I have no idea how to get there.  I think we mess up Jesus’ words and think it’s all about heaven or some place later where we can live with Jesus. I'm not sure that when Jesus told his disciples “I’ll come back and get you so you can live where I live” he wasn’t necessarily talking about the afterlife.  Perhaps he was talking about the Resurrection.

Jesus came back from death and his Risen presence is with us now.  He lives where we live.  He lives where the lost, the poor, the brokenhearted, the suffering and the forgotten live.  He lives where we live.

Sometimes I make it hard: I try to figure out where Jesus is calling me to go, what path he wants me to take, where is the direction I must go.  When in fact, Jesus says later in John 14 that when we do the stuff he did/does then we are exactly on the road that Jesus is on.

  • When we love, love, love.
  • When we offer mercy and compassion.
  • When we forget about stuff and remember people.
  • When we are grace-ful and grate-ful.

Then we are living in the room that Jesus prepares for us. Thanks be to God!  Our room is ready now – we just need to walk through the door Jesus holds open for us.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow as we celebrate the 2014 HS Graduates and remind one another that we do and can know the way Jesus is leading us.

Grace, love and peace,
