War

2 Samuel 22:29-51

2 Samuel 22:29-37 “You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop ; with my God I can scale a wall. “As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great. You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.”

David was in a war, his whole adult life he seemed to be fighting those around him, the Philistines, the Israelites, it seemed everyone was against David.

Sometimes it feels like I should be in a war. The news tells me I should be afraid, I should fight for this or that. Some friends tell me I should be in a war to stop this or that, the TV and radio certainly let me know what I should be fighting for or against.

David says in verses 29 and 30 You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.” David is saying GOD arms us for the battle.

There is a picture of a man in Tiananmen Square China on June 5, 1989. He is standing in front of a tank column (they call him tank man). I think of what David is saying about advancing against a troop or scaling a wall and sometimes I think that I should take action to destroy an enemy or hurt someone who is doing wrong… and then I reread what David said and I think of another man. This man was accused of crimes he did not commit and sentenced to death. He had the power to fight, he was the most powerful of men, but he chose ( for me and you) to pick up the cross on which he was to be nailed to and carried it to its final destination, but it was not his final destination… and it is not our final destination.

We are called to stand up for those who are on the bottom, the widow, the poor, those without. And I am struggling to understand what to do.

Who do I look to? Who do I listen to?

I pray as you and I fight our battles, as you and I decide what wars we will get into that you and I look to Jesus for direction and that you and I listen to Jesus for how to live out our lives in this world.

For GOD will <2 Samuel 22:37> “broaden the path beneath you so that your ankles do not turn.”

GOD loves you and I no matter what path we choose! May we pray that we choose the path GOD has set for us this day.

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit I pray. I pray to feel you and see you in every breath I take. I pray Lord for you to help me alleviate my fears and I pray Lord for those that live in fear. AMEN!

Love, Peace, Presence- Jim Dietvorst
