True God

Dear Worshippers,

I pray the tempo of summer provides you with a season to re-center your life in the authentic Christ.

There is something about us that makes us constant creators of false gods, gods in our image. In Genesis, the Bible says that we were created in the image of God. Exodus, in the story of the creation of the golden calf, says that we attempted to return the favor! We keep making God over into our own image. Yet God, the living God, will not tolerate our idolatry. God keeps resisting our attempts to transform the divine into something of our creation. The Christian faith is lifelong training in the worship of the true and living God.

The 16th century reformer Martin Luther says this in “The Large Catechism---The Book of Concord,” page 365. “A god is that to which we look for all good and in which we find refuge in every time of need. To have a god is nothing else than to trust and believe him with our whole heart. As I have often said, the trust and faith of the heart alone make both God and an idol. If your faith and trust are right then your god is the true God. On the other hand, if your trust is false and wrong, then you have not the true God. For these two belong together , faith and God. That to which your heart clings and entrusts itself is, I say, really your god.”

Where do you put your ultimate faith and trust? In times of great thanksgiving whom do you thank? In times of great duress or suffering whom do you pray to?

See Exodus 32-33 for further reflection.

Prayer: May this season of summer be a time where you are focused anew upon Christ your God. Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives and the executive director Rev Leon Kelly who will be our guest preacher this Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
