Touchy People

Dear Touchy People,

A group of people, according to some writings by Dr. William Willimon, had been reminiscing about the history of their congregation, its ups and downs, the high points and the valleys of despair.

One of them said, "When I think about all this church has been through, the trouble we have had, I think the fact that we are still here, still here in this place as the church is a great testimony to the power of God. If God hadn’t wanted us to be here, we sure would never have made it. But here we are. “We may be the only evidence that God raised Jesus from the dead on Easter,” another said in agreement.

Perhaps those quotes from a conversation that Dr. Willimon recorded could apply to most churches. The very existence of God’s Grace Community Church(GGCC) for 10 years despite the long odds set against it, makes it a visible embodiment of the power of the crucified and risen Savior Jesus!

Nothing could match the testimony of the risen Jesus more effectively than the saints and sinners that form the church gathering still 10 years after the inception of our missional community. We are not perfect people. Gathering each week are a collection of the world's wounded, who like Thomas have doubts. We gather not as perfection but as forgiven sinners, mended and commissioned by Jesus' mercy to change the world. Just as in John 20:19-31, faith is formed anew through doubts, wounds and scars.  When we reach out to others in our midst in the sharing of the peace with a handshake or a hug, we reach into the same wounds of Jesus, that Thomas touched and faith is formed anew.

Thanks be to God that we are a touchy congregation.  It is in the gift of touch that doubts are addressed and faith is formed once more.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J Jensen
