Too Big a Burden

Dear Hated,

John 15:18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

Hate is such a strong word. I used to use it rather flippantly, but haven’t done that for years. I think when most children use it they don’t know what it means. When someone says “I hate…” I often say to the person “do you really hate it? And generally I get a reply back: "Well, it really annoys me or bothers me.”

My favorite hate quote comes from Martin Luther King Jr. He was talking about being tired of violence and hatred. He said, “I see what hate does to a person and I have decided to take the easy way out and love, because hate is just too big a burden to bear.” And Jesus says to John, “If the world hates you, keep in mind it hated me first.”

My heroes of the faith have all taken actions that have brought hatred upon them. Every hero of the faith my spiritual imagination can bring to mind has been or is hated. So I wonder if there is something to this teaching?

This Sunday our sister in Christ, Angie Jumper will be with us. Angie is a leader in inter-racial relationships from Booneville, Mississippi to Rock Canyon High School. We are blessed in a world of racial tension to have her as a leader we can follow in Jesus' name. I hope you can each make it this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:30 to hear her. She will also be at my home this Friday night for an event.  Click here for details about Friday night.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
