Time for change

Fall begins later today. Although it certainly doesn’t seem like it with this heat. But, the days are getting shorter and the nights cooler and the trees are changing so, it must be fall.

It occurred to me that fall is the perfect time for us to be considering Mark 9:30-37. Specifically, Mark 9:35. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.”

The deciduous trees were in their prime. So full and lush and bright and strong and beautiful. But they can’t stay that way forever. There must a time of rest and regeneration and pruning back and silence for them to grow and develop further. To become even more what God created them to be. And, their soil is nourished by what they let go of – their leaves to become compost and nutrition.

The trees are giving us a lesson in what it means to be last and to be servants. They give of themselves each year so that transformation (see Tammy’s devo yesterday) can take place.

May we follow Jesus into servanthood this fall. May we be willing to give up our place to let another go. May we welcome the journey. May we be listeners who allow others to share their stories. May we serve with respect and joy and humility.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 or 10:30 am as we gather to hear these truths and celebrate God’s Word. It won’t be the same without you.

Grace be with you,
