This is Nothing New...

We live in troubling times. Our economy is shaky. People are nervous about their jobs. Homes are losing value and, in some cases being foreclosed. Flu season is here and there are warnings about potentially deadly strains of the virus. Instability in the world has places like Iran and North Korea rattling their swords. U.S. troops are in harm’s way in Afghanistan. And on, and on, and on…

But, this is nothing new. Throughout history cultures have struggled with invading armies, plagues, economic setbacks, corrupt governments, natural disasters, and so on. In John 16:33 Jesus tells us that we will have many trials and sorrows.

John 16:33 “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (NLT)

Even though Jesus knows that we (as did our ancestors) will have trials and sorrows He also encourages us to take heart because He has overcome the world. Paul reminds us that we are citizens of heaven in Philippians 3:20.

Philippians 3:20 (New Living Translation) But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.

Jesus comforts his disciples in John 14 and reminds them that there is more to come than what we have here on earth.

John 14 1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

So today let not our hearts be troubled and let us think about the wonderful place that is being made ready for us to live forever. Jesus is making our bed and setting our place at the table even as we go about our business here on earth today.

Thanks be to God!
