Dear Insiders and Outsiders,

Jesus talks straight, and shares what is on his mind with the women at the well in John 4:5-42. True to form and without a passive aggressive bone in his body he tells the woman what is on his mind. He wanted her to face the fact she had five ex-husbands and a current live in significant other she had not bothered to marry. (John 4:17,18) She was at the well, but her thirst was for a relationship with the living waters of Jesus.

Do we (Christians everywhere, not just you and me) worship in “spirit and truth “ (John 4:23,24), or too often do we worship good order and being pleasant with one another? Is church where we come to have peace, stability, good order and decorum, middle class respectability, or do we seek the potentially disruptive blessing of the Spirit? Rather than focus upon and receive truth, it seems that we can slip into the habit of keeping everything nice and predictable, all done with a smile on our face, no matter the facts of life.

It is a claim of the Christian faith that Jesus, the “Living Water,” refreshes and empowers us so that we can venture forth to be with a living God in “spirit and in truth.” Is there anybody out there who is putting on a good face, living in good order, and practicing decorum, but has a deep thirst for the living truth? Jesus is standing near ready to offer drink.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
