The Space Between

Genesis 44:1-34

Genesis 44:4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?’”

Have you ever been between a rock and a hard place?

The story of Joseph’s brothers going to Egypt to get food to feed their families due to a famine is quite exciting and intense… but if it was you or I it would have been very painful… and sometimes life is painful!

Joseph’s brothers screwed up big time a long time ago, maybe 15 to 20 years ago, and now they’re trying to be honest and “good” but it doesn’t always work out in a good way, even when you’re being honest and “good.”

Joseph sets his brothers up for disaster and it doesn’t end well. Joseph pins a major crime on Benjamin, the youngest, his father’s pride and joy. And his brothers are in pain and… they know they hurt their father before and they don’t want to hurt him even more now!

Genesis 44:30-31 So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.

Sometimes in life no matter how you are living, no matter how “good” you are, you end up between a rock and a hard place!

It isn’t GOD! GOD doesn’t punish, GOD loves!

At some point:

Someone is going to get into a car accident.

Someone is going to lose a job.

Someone is going to get cancer.

Someone is going to be wrongly accused.

It isn’t GOD! GOD doesn’t punish, GOD loves!

As I look at Genesis 44 I take two things away:

Be a little less like Joseph. Yes, he was treated terribly by his older brothers, but treating others badly doesn’t make you feel better… and it doesn’t make others feel better either.

Be a little more like Judah. All of us, you and I, have done bad things in the past, some of us have maybe done very bad things in the past. BUT, that’s the past! Today is a new day. Today you don’t have to cause any one else more pain, even yourself!

Genesis 44:33-34 Now then, please let your servant remain here as my Lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me?

I pray today we, you and I, realize that GOD doesn’t punish and neither should we!

I pray today we, you and I, realize GOD loves and so should we!

Love, Peace, Presence,
