The Pull

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Moralism attempts to accomplish through the law that which can only be accomplished through the gospel. It thinks that merely by filling the air with lots of “should “ and “ought” and "must”, people will be coerced toward goodness.

The great theologian Reinhold Niebuhr said that, “most great moral achievements depend not upon push but pull. You may be able to compel people into certain minimal ethical acts, but the greatest deeds are done from love, out of affection,  attraction to the good,  rather than out of shame or coercion.”

When will we live in the promise that has been given long ago?

(biblical reference for further reflection Romans 12:2, 9-20 and Romans 13: 8-9)

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
