The People We Are

Dear Saints and Sinners,

T.S. Eliot the poet once asked ,”Why should people love the church?” Eliot went on to answer the question. “Because she tells them of sin and death and other unpleasant facts of life they would as soon forget."

We ought to love the church for the way that the church, despite its flaws, loves us...enough to tell us the truth about ourselves and the truth about God. When the church says ,"God is love," we mean not only that God loves us as the people we wish we were, but also as the people we really, truthfully are. We are sinners. We are finite, frail creatures who are often miserable, and in misery that is often of our own creation. The church tells us the truth about ourselves and about God.

See Matthew 4:1-11 for further biblical reflection.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
