The Lord Needs YOU!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are on the brink of the climactic events upon which our faith has been constructed. On Sunday we will lift up the account of Palm Sunday which propels us into the story of Holy Week, Jesus' betrayal, last supper, death, and resurrection.

The beginning of Holy week is Jesus' triumphant ride into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Jesus stopped to request a donkey that he could ride, telling the handlers of the animal that, “The Lord has need of it," (Matthew 21:3). We all have reasons for declining the Lord's invitation that, “The Lord needs YOU!”

I grew up in rural Iowa in a community that was filled with farmers. I love farmers. I also love to poke fun at my famer relatives and friends. It has been said that farmers are never satisfied. Either it is too wet or too dry, or there are too many bugs, or there is not market for the produce, or whatever.

Once a certain farming community had a great year. Crops were great. Prices soared. Bank accounts bulged. A local teacher commented to one of the old time farmers that,”He would have to admit it had been a pretty good year.” The old farmer said, ”Oh fair to midland I suppose. That much crop is hard on both the soil and the machinery.”

When will we stop finding reasons to respond, "It's not a good time for me. Pick her." Count your blessings - the Lord has need of you!

The Lord has need of you as one of the characters in Holy Week's story. May we refrain from declining the invitation. Let us each prayerfully enter in once more this year and ask for Jesus to reshape us anew in God's image.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
