The Light

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4.

Hearing Pastor Dave’s sermon “Peace in the Wake of a 9/11,” caused me to really reflect on that event and how it shaped and changed the world as we knew it.

On 9/11/01 and for several days after, I went through the regular motions of my life, but nothing was the same. I felt dazed and confused as I tried to comprehend this unbelievable tragedy and the amount of devastation and loss. Life, as I knew it, was threatened that day and I was reminded of just how tenuous life is and that I shouldn’t take anything for granted.

In the wake of all that devastation, loss, and grief it was hard to see God and to make sense of what had happened. But, as the days went by and the miraculous stories -- from the twin tower survivors, the bystanders, the first responders, and the courageous people on Flight 93 -- came forward I began to see God’s light creeping into the darkness. For months later and particularly on the first anniversary there were so many stories of courage, selflessness, kindness and love. For me, that was the light that came out of the darkness.

We recently visited the 9/11 memorial and museum. It was an incredibly moving experience. And, as sad as it was, I felt better for being there. I think the experience provided comfort because it is such a beautiful tribute to those who lost their lives. It was also a tribute to the human spirit and how people rose to the challenge, and sacrificed and gave of themselves for others.

Thanks to Pastor Dave for reminding me of all that was lost that day, so I can pray for comfort for the thousands of people who lost someone they loved on that tragic day as well as be inspired by and thankful for my fellow man and how the very best showed up in and through the devastation.
