The Journeyer

The definition of journey by Merriam-Webster: (noun) something suggesting travel or passage from one place to another, or, (transitive verb) to travel over or through. On Sunday, March 17th, Vikki asked us to identify journeys we take. We had several answers: journeys in our careers, family trips or vacations, moves within or across state boundaries, and more. One or two people mentioned our journey in faith, as well. With the advent of Spring today, March 21st, I reflect on spring breakers preparing to or taking journeys: to the mountains to ski, to the sunny beaches down south, or just downtime from school, if a break is a form of a journey.

As I reflect on journeys, I think about the times when a journey is something required or unexpected, such as a trip back home due to sudden illness in the family or a forced shift in careers, or it can be something chosen and planned for, such as a Disney vacation or a Christmas celebration with the extended families or a new career opportunity. Journeys can be time- or location-based, or even mentally or emotionally founded. Through it all, we are all journeyers.

Even further, the Bible references many journeys: the journey of Abraham & Sarah (as Vikki mentioned), Noah and the flood, Moses and his travel through the Red Sea into the desert and beyond, or Jesus’ journey to Palestine. There are several verses in the Bible that refer to journeys.

Proverbs 4:14: "Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil."

And, as journeyers, we hear this guidance:

Hebrews 11:13
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.

For every journey, whether a physical or emotional or mental, God is with us; we can live by faith, knowing we are not alone. Even when we move away from the path He wants us to take, he remains by our side. Lauren Daigle has a song, Trust in You, where she says this:

Every moment of my wandering
Never changes what You see

And

There’s not a place where I’ll go
You’ve not already stood

Today, take a moment to welcome Spring, and welcome the new journeys that you will take, knowing that God is by your side.
