The Emperor's New Clothes

Do you remember the folktale, The Emperor’s New Clothes, by Hans Christian Anderson?  The Emperor and most of his constituents promoted a lie as truth.  The new clothes were said to be invisible to anyone stupid or unfit for their job.  The voice of one small child was the only thing that broke through with the truth: the vain man wasn’t wearing any clothes!

Why does the truth seem to be so difficult? And, what is truth anyway?

“And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” ~ John 1:13

Why does everyone have a different opinion on what truth is?  Jesus is full of grace and truth and yet his followers don’t always seem to have the same.  Is truth important?  Is telling the truth important?  How might we find the truth?

"There are very few human beings who receive the truth, complete and staggering, by instant illumination.  Most of them acquire it fragment by fragment, on a small scale, by successive developments, cellularly, like a laborious mosaic." - Anaïs Nin

Finding the truth of who I am and how I shall live is part of the journey of life and I expect that as soon as I think I’ve “got it”, it might just slip away or a new understanding might be revealed and the search will be on again.  I pray that I might keep my eyes open, my ego in check and my questions ready so that I might be more like the small child who didn’t buy the lies of the world.

I’m looking forward to hearing Pastor Dave’s sermon tomorrow titled, “The Truth About John the Baptist and Michael Jackson.”  May God speak truth into our hearts.

God bless you,
