The Devil Inside

Matthew 12:22-50

Matthew 12:22-25 “Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the son of David?” But when the Pharisees heard this they said, “It is only Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.”

Wow… every household divided against itself will not stand. I don’t mind Jesus talking about kingdoms divided against themselves will be ruined, but he always brings it down to the personal level… to you and me personally!

Jesus tells the Pharisees in 12:34-36, “You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”

INXS came out with a song years ago “The Devil Inside” in which they say “Every single one of us has the devil inside.”

Anger, hatred, worry, doubt, fear… they are inside each and every one of us, because we are human. And as humans, we can choose to allow these feelings to fill our mind and eventually our heart... and as Jesus says, the overflow of the heart is what our mouth speaks. And as we speak out of our anger, hatred, worry, doubt and fear… we destroy ourselves and those around us. Those, in any other time, we would never want to hurt!

So, this day… today… let us acknowledge the devil inside… inside each of us… and instead of anger, hatred, worry, doubt, or fear… let us choose love, because, GOD, Jesus, yes “LOVE” is in each of us! And if it helps, know that it pisses the devil off when we do this and it truly brings us to healing… healing ourselves and healing those around us.

We don’t have to make a big move or any move at all, because GOD is already with us, GOD is already in us, GOD already loves us. All we need to do is let go of our fears, let go of our worries and love. Richard Rohr says, “GOD does not love us if we change. GOD loves us so we can change.” AMEN!
