The Cost of Free

Recently, I have been inundated with emails and have noticed many signs claiming access to something that is free. Free checked bag for airline travel! Free coffee with the purchase of a new coffee machine! Free kid’s haircut, if you come to the brand-new salon!

More often than not, there is a catch. The flight is already a big expense and may even be more than another carrier. The coffee machine is twice as expensive as what you might normally consider reasonable. The salon asks you to buy a certain dollar amount of hair product, to get the free haircut.

Romans 5:17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Jesus paid the price for us. It is because of him we receive free grace. The picture that Scott Freeman painted on Sunday reminded me of this – the first image of Jesus on the cross. But, as the image transformed into the tree, with birds perched in its branches, and birds taking flight in the sky, I was reminded that we are like the birds – free because Jesus saved us and set us free!
