The Center

What does it mean to put God first? And, is that what God wants us to do? Sometimes we hear that we must make God our priority, above all things. But I wonder if it’s more than that.

In John 15 we hear Jesus say, “I am the true vine”… “I am the vine, you are the branches.”

It’s more than putting God at the top of our to do list.

With Jesus’ vine and branches image, the vine is in the center; not at the top. I think that might mean that God (“I am” is God’s name you know. See Exodus 3.) is in the center of our lives, our relationships, our vocations, our rest, our everything.

Jesus continues, “Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.”

God in the midst of our lives is how we might bear much fruit. What is fruit in this context? I’m not exactly sure, but perhaps it’s the loving relationships we cultivate with God in the center of all our relationships. Perhaps it’s the community we build per Jesus' command to love our neighbors. Perhaps it’s the power and strength we gain from knowing that nothing is impossible with God when we are attached to our core of the vine. Perhaps it’s the joy and hope we gain by allowing Jesus to prune away anxiety and fear.

Let’s not put God first. Let’s make God the center of our lives. Because with Jesus, we can do anything.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 or 10:30 am as we gather to worship, praise and thank our God who promises to be among us.

Grace be with you,

Vikki
