Sunday to Monday / Work From Rest

“God designed us to be productive. But we build our identities around our activities. We are not living in the truth of who God created us to be. We have become human “doings” rather than human “beings.” We need a biblical framework for a rhythm of life that allows us to be fruitful in balance with being at rest. We need to be secure in who we are, based on what Christ did for us on the cross and the very great promises we have that we are loved and accepted by him.” – Mike Breen

Sunday we joyfully gathered to celebrate who God created us to be: human beings who abide with God and do the work that God gives us.  The Creation Story in Genesis is an affirmation of faith: God delights and wants to be intimately involved in us and creation and left a God-shaped impression on us that can only be filled by God.  God and all of creation rested on the seventh day so that humankind would be refreshed and ready to do the work God had given.  The rhythm of our lives allows for rest/abiding in God that we might be fruitful in our work. Thanks be to God!

Reflection and discussion for the abiding moments of your week:

  • How do you rest? When do you rest? Read John 15:1-8
  • How has God gifted you to bear fruit? (To do that what God has created you to do?) Are you bearing fruit? Why or why not?
  • What is your reaction to this statement: “We have become human “doings” rather than human “beings”.
  • What rhythms have you set in your life to allow you to work from rest?
  • Looking ahead to next Sunday: When has God broken into your life to get your attention? Did you stop and listen?

For families and anyone desired a bit more experiential discussion opportunities:
