Sunday to Monday / Three Things

“It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you’ve got!”
~ Sheryl Crow,“Soak Up The Sun”

Yesterday was Pentecost Sunday (the birthday of the church when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples and all who believed). Today is Memorial Day. We celebrated both in worship.  Everyone received a "Buddy Poppy" made by veterans and sold by the VFW to remember those who made their lives a sacrifice for ours.

Jim Dietvorst shared a great sermon on John 15:18-27 where Jesus talks about being hated, but our response is to love. Anne Lamott says, "You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out the God hates the same people you do." There are three things we must remember:

1) Love Each Other. Simple, Right?

Mahatma Gandhi: “The straight path is as difficult as it is simple. Were it not so, all would follow the straight path.

2) People will hate us for what we believe and do, and people will hate us for what we don’t believe and don’t do.

Larron Jackson says, “It’s not about being right every time, it’s about being faithful every time.

3) Jesus will send the Holy Spirit to us so we will not go astray.

And repeat, as often as necessary: I am a wonderful, loving, precious child of God.

Check out these thoughts, discussion and prayer starters for your devotional time this week:

  • Read and spend some time with John 15:18-27. Why do you think Jesus talked about “hate”?
  • Larron Jackson says, “It’s not about being right every time, it’s about being faithful every time.” What does it mean to be faithful?
  • Pray that the Holy Spirit that Jesus sent will help you not go astray.
  • Looking ahead to next week: Read John 3:1-17. We know John 3:16, but what about the whole story?
