Sunday to Monday / Small

"Somewhere deep in our hearts we already know that success, fame, influence, power, and money do not give us the inner joy and peace we crave."
~ Henri Nouwen,The Selfless Way of Christ

Happy Labor Day! Yesterday we explored Emily P. Freeman's book, Simply Tuesday - Small-Moment Living in a Fast-Moving World and Jesus' teachings from Mark 4 and Matthew 11.

We can follow Jesus into living "small" and appreciating small moments because Jesus isn't calling us to bigger and faster and better - Jesus is calling us to himself. We can embrace and celebrate small - being humble, quiet and real.

Here are some thought/conversations starters and resources for your week.

  • Do you agree or disagree with this passage from Simply Tuesday? Why? “Effort toward excellence in my work can silently morph into effort toward perfection in my soul. …I don’t see Jesus calling me to excellence. I see him calling me to himself.” – Emily P. Freeman
  • In what areas is it most difficult for you to release outcomes?
  • Read Mark 4:30-32. What is your impression of the mustard seed after hearing how it’s a wild plant, growing where it will and spilling over into everything? How have you seen the kingdom of God like a mustard seed in your own life?
  • Looking ahead to next week: What comes to mind when you hear the words, “In the beginning…”?
