Sunday to Monday / Love is the Root Command

“I have been mothered by a whole tribe of women, some who had children of their own, and some who didn’t. I thank God for each one of them, and thank them for mothering me when I needed it, and for giving me such a rich variety of images for what it means to be a mother.”
~Shauna Niequist, “Bittersweet”

Mother's Day we heard from a variety of moms, sharing their challenges and blessings of being a mother, having a mother and being surrounded by women who mother them. We focused on Jesus' words from John 15:9-17 about how we love because he first loves us. It was a beautiful morning.

Here are some thought starters, reflection ideas and conversations for your week.

  • Read John 15:9-17. What does it mean to you that Jesus has chosen you to love?
  • Do you know a mom who needs grace? “Let’s think about grace – grace from a God who loves us and values us and picks us up every time we fall, with just exactly the same love and tenderness you feel when you pick up your kids after they’ve fallen. Let’s give each other a break and a little help and some soft places to land.” ~Shauna Niequist, “Bittersweet” Pray for her and reach out with a note, a call, or a text to share some grace.
