Sunday to Monday / Learning Circle

What I pray for is Strength with Love, not Strength without Love for that is reckless and abusive, and not Love without Strength for that is sentimental and anemic. What I pray for is Strength with Love, where Strength is Love implementing the demands of Justice and Justice is Love correcting anything that is against Love. ~Martin Luther King Jr.

“For through violence you may murder a murderer, but you can't murder murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you can't establish truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can't murder hate through violence. Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that.” ~Martin Luther King Jr.

This week’s message was from Mark 1:14-20. Repent & Believe. Jim Dietvorst reflected on the learning circle that Pastor Dave introduced last week – What is God saying to you? What is God asking you to do about it? He spoke to several Martin Luther King Jr. quotes referring to love as a Kairos moment. When MLK talked about love he also talked about non-violence. The congregation participated in an experiment affirming MLK’s quote that “darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that.”

Jim shared one of the greatest Karios moments in his life, a moment that happened in the name of love for his daughter, when everything changed because it was the right time. He and his wife, Diana, moved around the learning circle from observe, reflect & discuss to plan, account & act.

Things to Ponder this Week:

  • What does it mean to Love with Strength? Where do you see strength in love?
  • Does GOD always speak to you from a voice of love?
  • Do you see love as sentimental? Is it easier to repent but not believe?
  • Can you see any place for violence? Where are the places in your life where violence is the only option?
  • What does it mean to you that “Darkness cannot put out darkness, only light can do that?
