Sunday to Monday | Last is First

“The silence was deafening, they had been arguing with one another over who among them was the greatest.” Mark 9:34 Msg

We gathered to consider Jesus' words in Mark 9:35, “So you want first place? Then take the last place. Be the servant of all.” Do our ambitions get in the way of following Jesus into serving? Pastor DJ shared a story of how seminary president candidates were evaluated by how they treated the custodial staff at their institutions. How do we treat the last and the least? Do we treat children with respect and honor? Jesus' legacy was:

  • His purse to Judas
  • His body to Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus
  • His mother to the beloved disciple John
  • His seamless robe to the soldiers
  • His peace to his disciples
  • His last supper to his disciples
  • His baptism to new believers
  • His love to his children
  • His healing to the sick
  • His teachings to the hungry in mind and spirit
  • His church to society
  • His Gospel to the world
  • His hope to the hopeless
  • His presence with all God’s children

(quoted by Robert Strand “Fascinating Facts about Jesus”, Green Forest press, AR: New Leaf Press, 2000)

Check out photos from last week's ministries:

Take the message into your week:

  • When has the meaning to a truth escaped you, and only after a period of time have you come to realize what is now obvious? (See mark 9:31,32)
  • How would you define “servant leadership”? Who are some servant leaders who have made a positive impact on your life?
  • In an interview process, would you consider asking the janitor what he or she thought of lead management candidate?
  • Looking ahead to next week: How do you deal with a bully? (Mark 9:38-50)
