Sunday to Monday / Giving Thanks

“Lord, we have worked real hard…but we thank you anyhow....”
~Jimmy Steward, Shenandoah

We have much to be thankful for; may we be like the one leper (of ten) who turned back to thank Jesus and praise God.

For your reflection and discussion Thanksgiving week:

  • Lepers were the outcasts of biblical times who were only known from a distance. Is there a blessing that comes when you know the only response is “Lord have mercy on us”? (Luke 17:13)
  • One person out of ten who were healed returned to say thank you (Luke 17:15). Is it the majority or minority that shares gratitude, and which are you in?
  • Why would an outsider be the most grateful? (Luke 17:17)
  • Old Testament theologian Walter Bruegemann defines a blessing as “the moments when heaven and earth collide.” If he is right, what are the blessings you give thanks for?
  • Looking ahead to next week: If Jesus were to be your dinner guest, how would that effect the dynamics of your mealtime? (Mark 13:24-37)
