Sunday to Monday / Don't Be Right - Live Right

"Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate, and to humble." -Yehuda Berg

“Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness.” – Mother Theresa

Our Sunday worship continued with Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. But now, instead of "blessed", "salt" and "light", Jesus is talking about hard stuff. Keeping the commandments like murder, adultery, false witness. Rather than guidelines, Jesus is telling us that the law is much more difficult than we imagine. Our words have power - to wound or to heal. It's about relationship (it's always about relationships with Jesus!) and how we must give up being "right" to be in "right relationship". With God and with each other. Good and difficult.

Reflect on the message Jesus challenges us with in conversation or devotional time.

  • When are your words and actions not in sync?
  • Why are Jesus’ words in Matt 5:21-37 so hard to hear? How do you try to follow the “law” without engaging vulnerability and relationship?
  • Where can your words speak life? Pray about how you might bring words of hope to someone who desparately needs to hear the Good News.
  • Looking ahead to next week: When have you seen Jesus present among two or three?
