Sunday to Monday / Can Anything Good Come Out of the City?

On Sunday we welcomed Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock as our guest preacher.  Mayor Hancock’s visit resulted from a shared belief that the city and suburbs can be a blessing to one another. GGCC has made this a core mission and is active in Denver through participation with The Gathering Place, Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, Confluence Ministries and Extreme Community Makeovers.

A common bond among Mayor Hancock and Pastor Dave is the desire to help those in the inner city, especially the young, homeless and unemployed. In honor of his visit, Sunday's entire offering is going to these ministry partners in Denver, including the Mayor’s requested project, Denver’s Road Home.

Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives:  Rev. Kelly serves tirelessly in Five Points to build relationships to keep children and youth out of gangs.  We serve at his after-school program twice monthly.  Join us Sept 11 and 18.  Learn more at www.opendooryouth.org.

The Gathering Place:  We host Bingo monthly at the sole program in Denver that welcomes women and children experiencing homelessness daily.  Next Bingo game is Sept. 9.  For more info visit www.tgpdenver.org

Extreme Community Makeover:  ECM coordinates volunteers to partner with underserved people to improve their homes and neighborhoods.  These projects build safer environments and cultivate community.  Serve with us next year or visit www.extremecommunitymakeover.org to serve this fall.

Confluence Ministries:  Passionate people connecting on purpose: to serve alongside the vulnerable, poor, oppressed and disenfranchised as an expression of our faith in Jesus Christ and unconditional love for all people.  We partner with Confluence through Whiz Kids, GED tutoring, festivals and more.  www.confluence.org.

Denver's Road Home per Mayor Hancock's request:  Denver's Road home is an innovative partnership involving the City and County of Denver and the Mile High United Way working together to end homelessness as we know it.  Learn more at www.denversroadhome.org

Here's some thoughts for this week:

  • Where do you have fears and wonder if “anything good” could happen there?  How might Jesus be stirring within you the invitation to take courage and “Come and See?”  (John 1:46)
  • Reflect on a time you took courage to try something.  How did Jesus bless you on the other side of your fears?
  • God “loved” us enough to “give” us God’s only Son.  Where might God be calling you to give yourself away more fully?  As we empty ourselves God fills us anew.
  • Pray for Mayor Hancock and government leaders, The Gathering Place, Confluence Ministries, Extreme Community Makeover (ECM), Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, Denver’s Road Home, the City of Denver, the Denver Metro Area, Colorado, the United States, the world, the Kingdom of God.
