Sunday to Monday / A Cup of Water

Jesus said:

“There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come follow me.” Luke 18:22

"whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward." Matthew 10:42

Jesus seems to be saying opposite things in these teachings: We must give it all up, but just a cup of water is enough?  Following Jesus is simple, but hard.  Thank God we come together to share in the journey.  We thank God for Theresa is willing to give up much to serve as the GGCC Bookkeeper.  We thank God for all who served at the ECM this past Saturday who shared a cup of water with some residents who surely needed it.  We thank God that when we serve others, we serve Jesus.

Here are some reflections and discussion starters for your week.

  • Which is easier: to “offer a cup of water”, (Matthew 10:42) or to “Give all that you have to the poor?” (Luke 18:22)?
  • What would be the most difficult thing for you to give away? What if Jesus asked for it? How has generous action transformed your life in the past?
  • Jesus once said, “whoever welcomes you, welcomes me” (Matthew 10:40). What would the world look like if everyone we met might be Jesus? How might we change the way we treat one another?
  • Japanese cleaning the soccer stadium after losing in the World Cup was counter cultural. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/soccer/japan-fans-earn-high-praise-helping-clean-world-cup-stadiums-article-1.1837615 Jesus was often counter cultural. How might we be counter- cultural for Christ in a world threatened by news of war and hatred?
  • Looking ahead to next week: How do you rest? When do you rest? Read John 15:1-8.
