Summer Fun

Childhood is the most beautiful of all life's seasons. Author Unknown.

When I was a little kid, one of my fondest memories was spending time with my family at Washington Park in Denver.  My grandma lived one block away from the park for years until she passed away in 1984.  On Sunday afternoons, my grandma, mom, dad, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins would walk to the park from her house carrying lawn chairs, blankets and games. Everyone would bring a side or dessert to share and we'd cook hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill.  Of course a great picnic back then was never without a game of Croquet. Seems like such an easy game, but hitting that silly little wooden ball through those metal hoops they call "wickets" was a challenge!  And it had to go through the "wicket" the right way or it didn't count. What's up with that?  It was a time of laughter, a time of freedom from the responsibilities of life.

As I got older, (still very young however compared to my age today, but still a kid), I loved to go to Red Rocks with my friends. I'm dating myself saying this, but my two favorite performers were Burt Bacharach and John Denver. The venue was beautiful as it still is today.  Summer and music outdoors back then and even now, just seem to go together.

“Let the little children come unto me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” (Matthew 19:14) This summer be a part of God's kingdom. Be a child again.
