Success an Obstacle?

Dear Successful,

In Mark 1:29-39 after what are perceived to be several ministry triumphs,  Jesus goes off to a “secluded spot” to avoid the accolades of the crowds. Christ seems to be avoiding the fruits of his success. While in college, I remember going into a classroom a little early. Someone had left this message on the chalkboard, “Will Success Spoil Jesus Christ?”

The question has haunted me to this day? Will the “success” as an acclaimed cultural icon, Jesus has experienced in our large expansive churches, ultimately be the greatest obstacle the Crucified One must overcome?

Read Mark’s first chapter for yourself. Focus especially on verses 29-39. When they need Jesus the most he says, “nope, I am going on to other places.” Perhaps there are many reasons Jesus didn’t want to follow orders and return to where he had been the day prior. Was one reason the fear of “success”?

Prayers for those going to Booneville, Mississippi on a Ministry trip this weekend. For those who have been victimized by sexual assault.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
