Solid Ground ?

Mark 13:1-23

Mark 13:1-4 “As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher! What massive stone! What magnificent buildings! Do you see all of these buildings, replied Jesus. Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”

Wow, that would be something to see. A beautiful temple one day and then the next day just rubble, but not a stack of rubble, but a completely leveled building without one stone sitting atop another. As I stop to think about what this would look like, two images go through my mind: 1) the Buddhist statues that the Taliban destroyed in March of 2001 in Afghanistan; 2) the twin towers that were brought down on September 11, 2001. What Jesus was talking about was very revolutionary. It makes you realize why in Mark 14:1 the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for a way to arrest Jesus and kill him.

Richard Rohr says you have to hit bottom before you can truly know solid ground. I know Jesus was talking about the temple in Jerusalem… right?

Paul in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians, chapter 6:14-16 says some strong stuff including “For we are the temple of the living GOD…”

“I” have built a pretty good life for myself, I have a large house, a wonderful family, plenty of food, several cars and the list goes on and on. We must be on our guard, as we are blessed, we must realize everything we have is a gift from GOD, EVERYTHING! Whatever we (I) have built can be laid flat in a heartbeat, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job can knock down any structure, any foundation we believe we have made to withstand any storm. And that is why I love what Richard Rohr says… When you hit rock bottom, know that you are on solid ground. There is no man-made temple that can do GOD justice. There is only you and me, “the temple of the living GOD.”

Mark 13:5-9 “As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled? Jesus said to them: Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, I am he, and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginnings of birth pains. You must be on your guard.”

As we prepare for the coming of our savior this Christmas season I pray that we enjoy the many things GOD is blessing us with, BUT, we must be on our guard. Let no one deceive you. There is nothing that anyone can give you or that you can buy that can make you any more beautiful than you already are. You are the temple of the living GOD and as long as you are on rock bottom you are on solid ground.

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit, We pray that you help us to see the temples we have built to keep us from you. Help us to let go of our man-made structures and impermanent foundations and know that you are our GOD. Lord Have Mercy! AMEN!
