Slow Change

I’ve been lucky to have been to many places and events that were so cool, so amazing, so beautiful, that I didn’t want to leave. Worship last week with Peter & Brendan Mayer. Along the Oregon coast last fall. Christmas morning with my family.

I think each time – wow, now I am changed. I can be different because of these experiences. I can be better.

But I fear that’s not true. Maybe I am changed in some ways for the experience, but in reality I fall back into my “old” self pretty quickly it seems. I guess I hope that mountaintop experiences will make mountainous change.

Jesus was on a mountain with Peter, James and John - his three closest friends. Something amazing happened: Jesus shone brighter than the sun, Moses and Elijah appeared and God spoke. God spoke! “This is my son; the chosen one. Listen to him!”

You would think that mountaintop experience would have changed those three disciples incredibly. But as we continue reading in the Gospels the stories of Jesus’ journey to the cross we find that’s not the case. Yes, they were changed but it’s really the sum of all their experiences that produced transformed lives.

Aha, I guess that’s true for us too. We have moments of mountaintop and we have moments in the low valley and the sum of our experiences are changing us, little by little. God speaks into our lives. Are we listening?

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. to share in a little mountaintop experience of God’s love in community. It won’t be the same without you.

Grace be with you,
