Sit and Listen

To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything is itself to succumb to the violence of our times.” -Thomas Merton

Sabbath observance invites us to stop.  It invites us to rest.  It asks us to notice that while we rest, the world continues without our help.  It invites us to delight in the world’s beauty and abundance.” - Wendell Berry

Sometimes I think things cannot happen without me.  Without me doing something to make them happen.  Or without me doing something to make them happen better.  Why do I think I’m so important?  Silly me.

Jesus might tell me to take a seat and spend some time with him.  God’s got my back.  Things will happen.  Some good things and some not-so-good things.  I can over-worry, over-do and over-think.  That’s why Jesus reminds Martha (Luke 10:38-42) and us to let the distractions go…sit down, breathe in his grace and listen to his love.

May we find some moments to rest:

  • Breathe in ~ Jesus, I sit at your feet
  • Breathe out ~ and listen

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9 or 10:30.  Together we’ll take some time to sit at Jesus’ feet and thank God for the gift of rest.  We’ll pray for one another and we’ll be filled with Jesus.  Photos will be taken for the GGCC photo directory.  Coffee and snacks will be consumed.  We’ll laugh, maybe even cry a little and grow our relationships with God and one another.
