Perhaps the most important thing we bring to another person is the silence in us, not the sort of silence that is filled with unspoken criticism or hard withdrawal. The sort of silence that is a place of refuge, of rest, of acceptance of someone as they are. We are all hungry for this other silence. It is hard to find. In its presence we can remember something beyond the moment, a strength on which to build a life. Silence is a place of great power and healing. – Rachel Naomi Remen

I got this in an e-mail over a year ago and I come back to it time and time again. This is the space I find in my heart when I meditate, when I pray; I am not alone, I am with my God and there is silence; powerful, healing silence. I err towards being a “talker”, being uncomfortable with silence. These words free me to hold silence space now, with friends, with family. To know that sometimes all that matters is that I am there, not weighing in, not telling my own stories; although there is a time and a place for words, sometimes all that matters is being present and bearing witness.

My prayer for you is to offer and find silence this week.
