Showing Wonders

Dear Spirit-Filled People,

Pentecost Sunday is May 31st. On that day we will lift up the creativity of the Holy Spirit among us.

“In the last days , God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophecy,

Your young men (and women) will see visions,

Your old men(and women) will dream dreams  (Acts 2:17)

Right now, it can feel like the “last days” as we face a pandemic. That part of the text is easy to understand right now.  We worry about both the medical and financial threat which looms.  Fear and despair loom.  We could sure use some “dreams and visions” from the Holy Spirit . We pray come Holy Spirit come!

Into the midst of our dark days the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus comes!   Last week I was feeling a bit gloomy and decided to make a list of the positive ways I have seen God at work “showing wonders among us” (Acts 2:19). The list I drafted looked something like this:

…..God invites us to take a deep breath of the Spirit each day through scripture, or by reading devotionals.

…..God’s Grace Community Church (GGCC)  has generous hearts who continue to give as they are able.

…..We are so blessed right now to not have facilities requiring upkeep and other resources.

…..Coming together now requires high tech understanding. We have been using streaming, websites, Zoom and other technologies for a while.

…..Through Zoom, we have added two new groups during this time, the Monday Women’s group and the Wednesday night gathering called “The Well.”

…..The pre-existing Friday men’s group has gone national with people often attending from 3-4 states.

…..Our overall strategic nature is agile and flexible. That comes in handy when the world is doing things most of us have never endured before.

…..People are looking for meaning and purpose in tough, out of control times.  Many times, we only ask “how do we get people to come to church?” Part of GGCC’s pattern of doing ministry is also asking “how do we send people into the world?”

….. There are places where it is not safe to go now.  Government and medical officials also remind all of us to limit traveling.  We are blessed to have long standing partnerships on the ground in areas where people are in need. We can Practice generous gifting of resources with those partners so their hands and feet can be Jesus, feeding and clothing those in need.

…..That you care enough about God's mission at GGCC to have read this email this far, is a blessing of epic proportion! Thank you! You matter!

GGCC is far from perfect. With an imperfect pastor. Yet through it all God is redeeming us anew each day. We also pray that the good work begun among us in the name of Christ Jesus continues, as the Holy Spirit breathes into us new dreams and visions even as we are locked down in quarantine.

See Acts 2, and 1 Peter 3 for further reflection.

Prayers: Tomorrow, Ted Hanlon, my best buddy in college turns 61 years old. Let us pray for the Lord to remind us of one person each day whom we can reach out to and celebrate God's creating of them.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
