Showing Compassion

Tuesday, on a flight for work, as many of the passengers were discussing rain as the forecast for our destination, I overheard the passenger in the row across the aisle from me talking with the flight attendant. She informed the flight attendant that she had lost her home in the recent floods in Colorado. The flight attendant showed her generosity by grabbing cash from her own wallet to hand to the passenger, who was left with nothing (or nearly nothing). It surprised me for two reasons: I hadn’t reflected on how significant a tragedy that the rain had been; and, the flight attendant was ready, willing, and able to do all she could for this woman, a complete stranger.
We’ve all heard of stories of compassion in our recent lives, those who reach out to others to give of their time, money, and kind gestures. This one touched me, because it was so generous, and the flight attendant didn’t even pause to reflect on what she could do with her funds – it was an almost immediate reaction to grab all her cash and help someone in great need, truly exhibiting the behaviors God wants us all to show (no thinking – all action).

1 Peter 4:10- As every man hath received the gift, [even so] minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

I will pray for the passenger tonight, as well as for the others who were so greatly impacted by the most recent Colorado, and other unexpected disasters. But, more than that, I will work harder to show compassion towards others, as Christ shows me.
