Shine On

Come into My Heart's House

“Let you – let your image be renewed within me be… Shine in splendor”

There is a whole lot of stuff trying to crowd into my ‘heart’s house.” Heck, there is too much stuff trying to crowd into my regular house. But that is another story. Except for this: it is easy to gather ‘stuff’ to make things pretty, to distract, to focus attention on everything but what really does matter. What is in my heart’s house?

This being Lent and all, we are inclined to focus on all that does not belong there. Pride, sloth, jealousy, envy, avarice – I LOVE AVARICE – my red cowboy boots are solely the result of avarice: I wanted something, Period. Not jealousy or envy, but avarice: wanting more, More. More. And what else, lies, worshiping other gods, not honoring Sabbath, adultery, not loving God, and not loving my neighbor as myself. And this: shame.

Shame. It gets down to that pretty quickly for many of us. We feel shame at what we do, have done, and – in cases like mine – simply for being. Chalk it up to whatever you will. Some of us had parents who fed shame like it was a daily dessert. Others found our way there later. But shame. A sense of being at our very core: unworthy. As my friend used to say, “A waste of skin.” Ouch.

So, let’s get back to basics: “In the image of God, God created them.” THAT, my friends, is who we are. Original blessing. Not curse. Not original sin. But Original Blessing. We screwed up. But we were made in God’s image, to look like, to be like, to do like, to DO God’s life on this planet. J.S. Bach, in the Aria IV of a cantata wrote words I keep in my Bible, “Come into my heart’s house. Let you, image renewed with me, shine with splendor.” So, yes, get rid of all the junk that doesn’t belong. But oh, please, do not forget this: YOU WERE CREATED TO SHINE! TO SHINE IN SPLENDOR! And, as I see each one of you, whenever I do, you are shining! Glory be to God! Who has come into our heart’s house and filled it with abundant light, and life! Shine, sister shine! Shine, bro, shine!

Prayer: Glorious giving God, you created us to SHINE! May we not hide our lights under baskets, or bedcovers, or in shadows of shame, but boldly put it out there: in actions that reveal your extravagance, mercy, justice, forgiveness, tenderness, laughter and joy, and in sheer hilarity at life’s beauty and absurdity. Give us courage to life as “God is in the house!” Amen.
