Shades Pulled?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Tony Campolo told this story in a sermon, “When I was in Haiti, I was at this restaurant table, ready to eat a meal. I looked to the right, and there were three boys…Dirty and filthy, with swelled bodies and hair thin and rusted colored from malnutrition. The boys pressed their noses against the glass, staring at the food on my plate. The server, seeing my discomfort, moved in quickly and pulled down the shade, and then he said to me, ‘don’t let that bother you; enjoy your meal.’ As if I could. But isn’t that what we all do? Don’t we all pull down the shade?

In the Bible, God invites people to go to the places of danger and challenge, to areas we are fearful of going. It is in those places that Christ comes to speak to us. In these wilderness adventures there is danger or risk. The encounters take something away from us, while offering something new. We are never to be the same again.

For further reflection read Luke 4:1-12.

Prayers: That we might seek spiritual adventure and encounter God in the dangerous wilderness.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
