Secret to Life

Last week I had an opportunity to ask a “soon to be 99” years young woman what her secret was. Her eyes lit up, she gave me the biggest, brightest smile that stretched from ear to ear and she replied, “Be Happy”.

WOW!! In all her years of wisdom and knowledge, she summed up my question with just two words. I don’t know what I expected her to say, but I think I thought there would be more to it than that. In a world of bigger, better and faster why wouldn’t she have more to say? I’m thankful she was to the point and I will never forget that moment.

I just LOVE the Tiny House concept and the new craze that is sweeping the nation. If you’ve seen these Tiny Houses, you know that storage is very limited, yet very functional and full of purpose. Therefore, if I were to someday build one of these, the boxes I have in storage must go. As I tackle the past and the “stuff” I’ve managed to hold onto over the years, I’ve tried to adopt the “less is more” philosophy. This is a slow process for me as I often times get caught up in thought. As I walk thru this I try to do so with intentionality. I want to be intentional about the things I keep; do I need it or do I want it? Even more than that, I want to be intentional about the relationships I’m cultivating in my life; both new and old … I want less stuff and more relationship. Stuff is just stuff, relationships are people walking side by side experiencing what life has to offer. This makes me smile … this makes me happy.

The night before I asked for the secret to life, I had an opportunity to hear Daisy from Love, Light and Melody speak about her Faith Journey. One of the things that stuck out to me from her story was that if you find Peace, you will find your Purpose.

I am always amazed at how God puts things together for us. For me what resonates in all this is that if you are at Peace, you will find your Purpose. If you have Purpose, you will be Happy. If you are Happy, you will have Life.

So what makes you happy? It will be different for everyone and can be a combination of things. Whatever it is, may God walk with you on your journey to Peace, Purpose and Happiness.

Dear God, Thank you for the people we come into contact with during our days. Thank you for the short phrases like “Be Happy” that can be very powerful. Please help us to be appreciative of the little things in life. May we walk with you by our side as we find our inner peace and purpose. In your name we pray. Amen.
