Sealed with a Kiss

Today is All Saints Day and this Sunday we will recognize the Saints who have been a part of shaping our lives. It is a day to remember those we have lost but also what they have meant to our spiritual formation.

My Uncle Donnie passed away in August. He knew that he was going to die after surviving 3 years with liver cancer. He radiated joy and peace before the pain got the best of his spirit. When I wasn’t sure I would get to see him before he passed I wrote a note letting him know how much I loved him and what a great uncle he had been in-spite of the nickname he insisted on using for me. (If you are really nice maybe I will let you know what that nickname was.) I did get to go and visit a couple of times before he got too uncomfortable for visits and I saw my note sitting on his table of treasures.

A few years ago, my Aunt Caudie passed away so my cousins had the daunting task of clearing out their home after Uncle Donnie’s death. My mom brought me a note the other day that they found in my Aunt’s treasures. It was a note that I had sent to her thanking her for a dress she had given me. It was fun to read what I was thinking back in January of 1976. It also made me a little weepy.  I told her I would feel guilty if I didn’t tell her how “super special” she was to me. I went on to say, “I show them (people I love) with my artwork but forget how special and delicious real words are!”

“Delicious” words! I love that my 18 year old self thought of writing words on paper to tell someone how much they meant to me and how they had shaped my life with “Delicious” words! My Aunt must have loved this note to have kept it so long, but if there had been any doubt as to its worth she sealed it with a kiss on the cover of the card.

My challenge to you is to tell the living saints in your life with delicious words what they mean to you and how they have shaped your life. Write these words on paper, something that can be held and savored; something that can be sealed with a kiss.
